Wave Moments

How do I steer the board sidewards along the wave once I'm standing?

I have the same problem with bodyboarding & bodysurfing: the moment I lean or face at an angle the wave goes right over me. I catch the momentum of the wave but I just don't glide sideways. Maybe there's some simple technique I haven't realised yet. Any suggestions? (It's a mini longboard)

  1. you have to steer with your back foot !
  2. By shifting body weight and using your feet. ^_^
  3. I found it easiest to start paddling the way you want to ride. If you paddle at an angle, it is much easier to stand up and continue that way. With a longboard it takes much effort to use your back foot and steer so set your self up early.
  4. I agree with Baller, paddling in the direction you wanna steer makes it alot easier. Takes time to get the hang of it tho lol
  5. you have to step back and put more weight on the back foot and kinda shift the board by your weight to the direction that you want to go. it takes practice so don't get discouraged. a make sure that you don't go all the way sideways though. you have to be at that perfect angle. you will get it soon enough.
  6. put a lot more weight on the back foot and dig the rails into the water without losing your balance. watch some stand up paddleboarding or longboarding videos and you will see what i mean. it really helps to watch surfers do it.
  7. Use your body a little bit, you'll find it comes natural after a while and you'll be able to do it your own way. After you feel bored with how your limited on your board, go for the short board, I love the rush and adrenaline I get from steering up and down a wave. JOY!
  8. You need to catch the wave before it breaks or as it breaks and turn right away. If your in the white water your gonna have a hard time turning.
